The So-called Death of the Mix Tape

February 10, 2007

Someone needs to tell Sean O’Hagan about the impact of social media on music. Oh, and about burning CDs. And thumbdrives. And m3u files.

Crowdsourcing Cops

February 9, 2007

It’s not a new concept, and this certainly isn’t the first time this has happened, but Kos’ post on whether William Donohue – President of the Catholic League – may have broken U.S. tax laws by “attempting to intervene in a political campaign” is a nifty example of crowdsourcing investigation. Wikilaw writ large, I suppose.

Pretzel man

February 7, 2007

I suppose Valleywag’s take on Jobs’ DRM sermon from the mount is that Jobs is twisting himself into a pretzel over DRM, but in any event, it is worth a giggle or two.

Klein v. Huffington

February 6, 2007

It is surely the height of folly for Joe Klein to take on Arianna Huffington over her criticism of his attempt to spin his position on the Iraq War. That Arianna, she takes no prisoners.

Thanks to Jason, I’ve just been treated to a superb screencast – a must-see that is very much in the mood of mesh.

Jobs’ DRM Sermon From the Mount

February 6, 2007

The ‘tropolis is abuzz over Jobs’ DRM manifesto (gist – Jobs to Labels: let my music go), though as usual the chatter is almost all mere repetition, with little added thought. One exception is Read/WriteWeb’s take on it (gist: it’s propaganda), which I agree with. I can’t help but think, largely because of its timing, that as admirable as its sentiments are, the manifesto is simply as a PR exercise designed to deflect the growing criticism of Apple’s DRM and increasing demands that Apple allow cross-platform interoperability.

What’s a Poor Minister To Do?

February 6, 2007

Gerard Kennedy’s pre-announcement that he will run for the nomination in the Parkdale-High Park riding is great news for those of us in the riding – I’ve always been darned impressed with the guy and his dedication to public service. A distinct improvement as well, to my mind, over his Liberal predecessor in the riding, the now slightly notorious Sarmite Bulte, who apparently planned to appear with Kennedy at his formal announcement. This presumably because she’s perceived within the party as having a chance at taking back the riding from Peggy Nash, and so in stepping aside is seen as taking one for the Party. The question now is, for what?… Surely, there is a style to which these media types have grown accustomed, as Michael’s post today on (the really, rather extraordinarily unimpressive) Bev Oda and her limousine-ing ways suggests.

Yet Another Dose of Copyreality from Michael Geist

February 6, 2007

With regularity that would make a swiss watchmaker proud, Michael routinely deconstructs, disassembles and debunks the copyright fantasies peddled by the media cartels (if there is a Captain Copyright, it’s Michael). Most recently, the object of his affection is the recent MPAA claim of assorted dangers to Western civilization posed by Canadian camcording. Today, a two-fer: Michael’s article, and Mike’s post on it at Techdirt.

An OS for the Days of Yore

February 6, 2007

Via Kedrosky, a post by Roger Ehrenberg that gives voice to what you’ve intuitively known for a long time: Microsoft may be ‘yesterday’s man’: “And it appears that Vista – the product, the PR, the marketing approach – is the result of such an organization. At times brilliant, very heavy, complicated and expensive…. This is a product for an era when the desktop ruled. And that era is long gone.”

“We prohibit users from uploading infringing material”

February 4, 2007

One can’t help but giggle at YouTube’s patently false and face-saving assertion, made in response to Viacom’s sweeping takedown notice. YouTube’s terms of service obtain the user’s ‘agreement’ that no copyrighted material will be uploaded, but there’s a world of difference between (at least $1.6B of difference, anyway) this and ‘prohibiting’ users from doing anything.
