Copyright Lobby “Out of Touch”

February 20, 2007

Michael has trained his sights on US copyright policy generally in an article on BBC about the recent IIPA recommendations (so adoringly parroted covered by Barrie McKenna in the Globe recently) that is making waves.

Talking (or not) About Online Disinhibition Effect

February 20, 2007

How odd (as far as I can tell) that this NYT essay on online disinhibition effect, or flaming, didn’t make it into Techmeme, where it might have been discussed as offering insights into social media behaviour, but did make it into cousin Memeorandum.

Nothing Like a Libel Suit to Drive Sales

February 20, 2007

This morning when I read of Conrad Black’s lawsuit against author Tom Bower for his new biography, its Amazon.com sales rank was 109,052. In about 9 hours it has broken 50,000. (Oddly, the equivalent Canadian numbers are #1315 (before) and #4,041).

Just Joost for Viacom

February 20, 2007

Or more accurately, acting as the technology provider that the content folks couldn’t or won’t create for themselves.Marshall Kirkpatrick worries about end of YouTube’s monopoly (an angle that Scott Karp wrote about recently) – “It would be a real loss to the world if the two tiers of creativity, professional and user generated, were forever bifurcated in different distribution channels … The emergence of viable online alternatives like Joost could spell trouble for any hopes that we will soon be able to watch Beavis & Butthead and Chad Vader all in one convenient location.”… Having one online video site seems to me a little like having one TV network – there should be room for multiple approaches, and going to multiple sites for different content shouldn’t be any more troublesome for video than it is for any other content, I suppose…. Henry Blodget frames it as clips vs shows, though I see no reason why Joost couldn’t show clips as well – their choice, I suppose – and wonders why anyone would want to watch TV shows on their computer (answer – because it’s there – whenever you want, where you want it – that’s the point, isn’t it?).In any event, I’m struck both by how fast YouTube grew and was sold, and how quickly serious competitors and new approaches are emerging.

WNP is Just Around the Corner

February 20, 2007

Wireless number portability is just ’round the corner, though as the Globe notes, you wouldn’t know it from telco advertising. Yet another sign, to my mind, of the cozy truce the providers have with each other as they carve up the market to share between them. But do WNP and a new auction for spectrum suggest that a more competitive market could be ’round the corner?

Ballmer Blames Pirates for Vista’s Poor Showing?

February 20, 2007

According to Nick Farrell, Steve Ballmer is crediting software pirates for at least some of the limpness of Vista’s sales activity. Nick doesn’t have all the details in his post, so one can’t really judge for oneself. But I was struck by the odd juxtaposition between this post and PC World’s online cover story today, “The Most Annoying Things About Windows Vista”, which begins with a piece explaining why there’s just no good reason to buy the most crippled version of Vista.

Satellite Radio Does Not Compute

February 19, 2007

I think my friend Mark is absolutely right to question whether anyone ought to care about the – snore – merger of XM Radio and Sirius. I’ve questioned the value of satellite radio here before. Paying for limited choice is already an anachronism. How is it going to look when we have 500G iPods that sync wirelessly with the home network, or grab music off the ‘net?

Alvin Ailey in Toronto

February 18, 2007

Last night brought to Toronto a rapturous performance by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. I’m a dance dummie – I haven’t a clue, really, and I’ve never really understood its appeal. No longer – last night’s performance was just about the most remarkable stage experience I’ve ever seen. The rest of the crowd felt the same way – the company was treated to endless curtain calls and applause that raised the roof.

Trusting MSM – New Mexico Radio Station Refuses to Run Stories Using Unnamed Sources

February 18, 2007

Editor and Publisher runs a fascinating story on one radio station’s refusal to run MSM stories quoting unnamed government sources – part of the backlash against the shoddy job many in the MSM did reporting on the Iraq story, and the Administration’s campaign to leak to the MSM in its effort to spin coverage and convince an initially reluctant Congress and public to support the war.

Freedom from Religion

February 18, 2007

If you’re looking for an excellent example of the banality and outright imbecility of MSM’s pandering in the recently renewed discussion about atheism, you won’t do better than this clip from Paula Zahn’s show on CNN. It’s become simply embarrassing to watch CNN’s slavish pandering to conservatives as it grasps for Fox’s audience.

“Up is down. Black is white”

February 17, 2007

John Gruber’s translation of Macromedia’s response to Steve Jobs’ sermon on the DRM mount is witheringly funny, and yet another reminder (for anyone who needs it) of the inane insincerity of so much corporate flubblegubble.

Dell Crowdsources Product Development

February 17, 2007

Suggestion Board controversy, though, like Pete Cashmore, I think inDiggnation over other sites using voting is as pretty darned tedious use of one’s time). Details at Direct2Dell, and Jack Schofield at the Guardian blog has a nice overview. This strikes me as a pretty darned cool idea. I can’t help but wonder if Dell learned from The Jarvis Fiasco (it has a nice ring to it – in the vein of The Caine Mutiny or The Bourne Identity)…. IdeaStorm is just an evil plan to take back the top Google hits from stories about The Jarvis Fiasco. But here’s the takeaway, for me: just as forums proliferated after the first few launched, what we need now is a platform that will allow anyone to create a branded voting-powered suggestion board – now that would be impressive.
