10 Things MSM Won’t Tell You About Its Coverage of the ‘Sphere

February 24, 2007

I could go on an on, but … Suffice it to point to a particularly bizarre and noxious drive-by on blogging. Linkbait (successful) from a dying publication. Hat tip to Jarvis.

PodCamp Toronto

February 24, 2007

I spent the morning at PodCamp Toronto today. It’s fair to say that there is huge interest in this city in pod and videocasting. The event was obviously enormously successful – big props to the organizers, Leesa Barnes of Podonomics, Jay Moonah of Uncle Seth and Online Music Marketing, Brent Morris of The Closet Geek Show, Julien of the In Over Your Head hip hop podcast, and Mitch Joel of Twist Image. There’s a social tonight, and a day 2 tomorrow.

Cranks and Operatives

February 24, 2007

Thanks to Mathew for passing along an interesting post by Steve Petersen on growing pains at Politicopia, a new political wiki in Utah, which has had some problems with unruly community members:Politicopia has broken some barriers between state legislators and who they represent, but it has also had a few hiccups. Like in virtually all things politics, some wiki contributors aren’t that cool — despite Steve Urquhart’s, who launched the wiki, explicit plea on the homepage that participants “Be cool.”Former U.S. candidate Pete Ashdown — who pioneered the use of wikis in political campaigns during the 2006 election — unfortunately encountered some unhip interlocutors who deleted comments…. In a blog comment response to these complaints, Ashdown argues that since some Politicopia participants weren’t cool that the wiki “still requires some steering from above to prevent the kind of actions that I have seen so far” — just like Wikipedia. My first reaction when I read Steve’s post was that some moderation is essential if the community around a controversial topic isn’t large enough…. But then again, it may be that topics like politics and religion are ultimately not amenable to wikis because too many in the community *are* cranks and operatives – or people who have vested interest in subverting the purpose of the wiki.

Google Office Doesn’t Compete with Microsoft Office

The way Expedia didn’t originally compete with travel agents and Zillow doesn’t compete with real estate agents. All in time.

Digital Readers – Oh, Great, PointCast is Back

February 23, 2007

That was my first reaction when I heard the news of rapid spread of digital reader software…. And of course my third was – I have a feedreader; so I actually already have two of those. Now I need another reader – in fact, one for each publication?… But – like my friend Mathew and others, I think it’s dumb.

If Google Lost My Data

February 23, 2007

Larry Dignan says that if Google Office loses data, there’s be no downside for them – because it’s at best a side venture for Google. This as part of a discussion over whether people will take to the idea of their data online…. I think that if Google Office starts toasting data, it will be widely known in a heartbeat, and no one who cares about their data – so, the entire business market Google is trying to reach with the ‘side venture’ – will drop it like a hot potato. The venture, side or not, will be incinerated until Google makes amends and wins back trust.

An Unsurprising News Day

February 22, 2007

In each case, the news has been long expected and the headlines are entirely anticlimactic.First, Google has formally announced its desktop application suite…. Well, perhaps Google wouldn’t be so bad after all …Next up, Apple has settled with Cisco over the the use of the word “iPhone”. In a shocking development, both now have the right to use it, on terms that are (also predictably, and perhaps by now also famously) entirely obscure (news flash: they will “explore opportunities” together). Finally, Telus has scrapped its plan to rebrand itself as a mobile purveyor of porn…. Perhaps the only thing about this story stranger than its appearance was the fact that just about everyone else in the country knew before Telus itself that Telus would eventually have to dump this plan.

Fluffy Bubblicious Business Writing is Back!!

February 21, 2007

I’m with my friend Mathew and with Larry Dignan on the light-as-air [Ed: light-headed, surely?] effervescence of Business 2.0’s piece titled “Tech IPO’s: They’re Back!”. This is linkbait (Ed: mission accomplished, surely?] , and not much more.

Ode to Copyright

February 21, 2007

From ode to a copy-cartel to a much sweeter ode to a copy-law – Yehuda Berlinger has reduced the Copyright Act to poetry. Extraordinary, and I’m predicting much love from the ‘tropolis.

Magic Backdating Ink

February 21, 2007

From The Recorder, the astounding behind-the-scenes details of option backdating follies at Mercury Interactive – details accidentally disclosed by a junior attorney at Mercury’s firm (who was presumably last seen hurriedly packing a suitcase and running for the airport) in a lawsuit filed against former executives by shareholders. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and then you’ll probably want to take a shower. WSJ Law Blog here, and WSJ here.

Startupping

February 21, 2007

Via John Batelle, an early look at a new blog, by Mark Flectcher of Bloglines, called Startupping. It looks like it aims to be “a one-of-a-kind community resource created for Internet entrepreneurs by Internet entrepreneurs. It is a place to share information, ask questions, and tap into the experience of others who have built and are building web businesses.” Great idea, great looking site.
