Good Advice on Corporate Blogging

July 18, 2006

Nicholas Carr has a column in Business Week on corporate blogging – it’s a nice precis with sensible advice, and a cautionary note drawn from the recent mugging of Dell after it launched its own blog. Much of what I read on this is written by people who have a financial interest in selling that […]

AOL and CBS

July 17, 2006

It occurs to me, as I think more about my post of earlier today, that AOL and CBS are in very similar situations. Each faces the difficult task of weaning itself off a still-lucrative model that is trending downward and needs to be fundamentally rethought if the underlying business is to remain viable. Same old, […]

“I Pretty Much Know What I Need to Know”

July 17, 2006

Via Paul Kedrosky, David Carr’s column in the NYT on the impact that CBS hopes Katie Couric will have on the CBS Evening News. The fly in the ointment is the diminishing relevance of the network news broadcasts to younger viewers and anyone else who gets their news off the ‘net. Paul picks up on […]

More Fun and Games with the Mac

July 15, 2006

Out of the blue, last week the Mac started unexpectedly shutting down when on battery power. There was otherwise no pattern to the shutdowns. To its credit, after two support calls (with very little waiting) Apple diagnosed the problem (defective battery), and quickly sent a replacement. Altogether a very positive experience.

Another Early Exit in Web 2.0

July 15, 2006

Yet another data point demonstrating that (i) the technology Borg (resistance is futile) – the Google, Yahoos, Microsofts etc. of the world – have learned from Bubble 1.0 that getting in early is the least insane approach to staying ahead of the curve, and (ii) the role for VCs in Bubble 2.0 is very different […]

More Rocketboom Advice

July 13, 2006

Jeff Jarvis posts some advice to Rocketboom from the pen of Fred Graver, executive producer of VH1’s Best Week Ever, and it’s the smartest commentary yet. One message: move on; nothing to see here, folks. Indeed. It’s nice to see Andrew moving on with a new ‘cast that’s getting positive critical reviews – this is […]

The Dell Blog

July 11, 2006

Much ado in the blogosphere about the new Dell blog. I’m with Andy Lark on this one: “The bloggerati just need to get over every blog coming out the gate reading like a conversation at the local pub and not rehashing the past trials and tribulations of bloggers. It takes time for a corporate blog […]

The Strength of Wikipedia

July 10, 2006

Today brings a strange WaPo article on the supposed weakness of Wikipedia because several of the original contributions on Ken Lay after his death were inaccurate, even intentionally so. The article was corrected within a few days of his death, and that, WaPo would have us believe, is a bad thing – better to not […]
