Google-YouTube: Fox in the Henhouse

October 10, 2006

Arrington asks one of the many obvious questions about the Yougle deal: what about Fox? (One can be excused for missing it in the sea of identical fanboy posts on the deal; it’s about the only original and critical bit of thinking to emerge on this deal in weeks.) Oh, to be a fly on […]

Countdown on the Masked Apple Employee

October 10, 2006

The Unofficial Apple Weblog posts on the Masked Blogger, an anonymous Apple employee who is now blogging, in spite of Apple’s well-known antipathy towards transparency. The obvious question is, in the age of the unmasking of Dead 2.0 and the Anonymous Lawyer, how long can the anonymity – and the Masked Blogger’s employment – last?

Old vs. New Media – Another Day, Another Controversy

October 9, 2006

Perhaps one of the downsides of the meme aggregators, or of the ‘sphere generally, is that they create the impression that every day is awash in controversy. I’m inclined to agree with Paul Kedrosky that much of this is pointless nattering; sometimes it seems that much of what is said is the consequence of lives […]

More on YouTube User-Generated Content

October 8, 2006

One of the obvious answers to my complaint of earlier this week about the disappointing absence of context to the Canadian media’s reporting of the war in Afghanistan is that the web is gradually allowing citizen reporting to displace, or at least augment, the traditional role of journalists. But I certainly didn’t have in mind […]

From Podcast to Netcast

October 8, 2006

Leo Laporte is quite rightly making waves over Apple’s muckraking about ‘pod’ trademark issues, and has been advocating a change in name from ‘podcast’ to ‘netcast’ – doing it himself for his very popular family of podcasts netcasts. I’ve no idea whether this act of digital disobedience will amount to anything, but I admire the […]

The HP Saga: Focus on Ann Baskins

October 7, 2006

The WSJ Law Blog asks the question I asked in my last post on HP: Bill Lockyer has indicted Patricia Dunn and Kevin Hunsaker – why not Ann Baskins?: We posed the why-not-Baskins question to three law professors, who offered their opinions with the obvious caveat that they do not know all the facts that […]

LesBlogs has just been announced for 2006 – twice the size; December 11 and 12. I’m thinking of going – if you’re from the Toronto area and went last year, do let me know – I’d like to know more about what you thought of 2005.

Problems with Feed?

October 7, 2006

A reader is having problems with my (and only my) feed on Newsgator. I see no issues on Google Reader or NetNewsWire, and others have reported no issue on Bloglines. Feedburner tells me they see no issues, either. If you’re having trouble could you please leave me a comment here or email me with particulars.

Sevin Rosen Shutters Fund

October 7, 2006

If you need any more evidence that too much money is chasing too few opportunities, the NYT is reporting that Sevin Rosen is shuttering its 10th fund just as it was prepared to close it. Funds are being returned, at least until the fever breaks: “The traditional venture model seems to us to be broken,” […]

Cut and Run – Canada in Afghanistan

October 7, 2006

John Dickerson of Slate runs a piece examining the political utility in America of the phrase “cut and run”, and covers the latest ground on continuing efforts by the Administration to prepare the ground to do exactly what, in the run-up to the mid-term elections, it is using to portray Democrats as cowardly and disloyal. […]
