OurTube

March 22, 2007

Lots of news recently on renewed talks among BigMedia about creating a captive competitor to YouTube. Rafat seems to have his hand on the pulse of whatever is going on, which seems to be changing from minute to minute. This development has seemed decidedly Keystone-ish from Day 1, and while the concept itself has been obvious from the outset, surely its wobbly execution points to the biggest problem with the concept; a venture born of the need to control cannot possibly survive having multiple owners.

He Stands on Guard For Thee

March 21, 2007

Scott Feschuk nails it, of course, in his ode to Andrew Coyne today:I love Andrew Coyne. Not in the sense of wanting to make out with him – you know, unless he’s given you the impression he’d be interested or whatever, in which case tell him to meet me behind the portable after study hall (and wear the paisley ascot) – but for his intellectual rigor, for his non-partisan honesty and, most of all, because he not only tears you a new one, he has the work ethic to stick around and tear your new one a new one.

Web 2.0: Waiting for the Next Wave

March 20, 2007

Peter Rip calls Last Call on Web 2.0 today; one of many we’ve seen in recent months…. At mesh we got tired of Web 2.0 ages ago, and as far as I’m concerned it’s well past time to stick a fork in it. I doubt it will happen until someone coins a marketable phrase for whatever comes next, though.Peter’s certainly right to comment on the lack of true innovation these days, but of course that’s exactly what you’d expect to see happening now: the commoditization of the technological leaps that created the current wave…. Wave begins with Breakthrough; Breakthrough gets implemented in myriad ways, none of which is particularly innovative on its own, but all of which would have been inconceivable before the Breakthrough (and all of which seem progressively less creative as wave continues); and as wave nears end, surfers look for next wave.

More Online Video Awards

March 19, 2007

As Scoble notes in the comments to Pete Cashmore’s post on the YouTube Video Awards, there’s already an online-video awards show – the Vloggies. Nonetheless, YouTube “will announce on Monday the launch of “YouTube Video Awards” – a late attempt to honor the best-user generated videos of 2006. The seven categories are Most Inspirational, Most Creative, Best Series, Best Comedy, Musician of the Year, Best Commentary and “Most Adorable Video Ever.””Just a reminder that we’re having our own video contest at mesh – and we’ll bring an out-of-town winner to Toronto, put them up in a hotel and showcase their video at the conference. Details on the blog, of course.

4 Laptops and No Newspapers

March 18, 2007

This was the scene this am in my neighbourhood breakfast joint. Not a newspaper (or magazine, for that matter) in the place – all the solos were on laptops, sucking down the (free) wireless, with ‘phones plugged in. Also, after a quick check I noticed that not a one was reading an online newspaper or Canadian content, or that matter. It was blogs, iTunes, the BBC and other stuff. Oh, and 50/50 on gender, and 3:1 Macs.
