June 25, 2005

Dennis Crouch has an excellent post recapping the current situation in the RIM-NTP patent litigation, complete with links to court filings and patent claims. Dennis’ final comment: Bottom Line: Unless the parties come to another settlement agreement, this case will continue for several more years.

Merchants Against Credit Card Theft

June 25, 2005

Tom Zeller has a great article in the NYT on the steps merchants are taking to protect themselves against credit card theft. And Tom gives us the simile of the day: Blink, many merchants say, and your defenses are compromised. “It’s like dealing with the Velociraptors in ‘Jurrasic Park,’ ” said Tracy L. Brown, a […]

Make Privacy Breaches Reportable

June 25, 2005

Ontario’s Privacy Commissioner has called for a new law to require businesses to report privacy breaches. The concept is modelled after a California law passed in the early stages of recent US breaches. It seems clear now that the law creates a powerful incentive for higher standards of care in data protection. Via Michael Geist.

AntiMuniWiFi Lobbying Gains National Attention

June 23, 2005

Both the WSJ (paid sub required – rats) and Forbes (ditto) are running stories covering the effort that telcos are making in the U.S. to block local governments from subsidizing or establishing municipal wi-fi networks, even where the telcos do not provide broadband. Why Blogs are Good for Mainstream Media

June 22, 2005

I just heard Sean Fine, editorialist for the Globe and Mail, on CBC Radio discussing the Globe, editorials, and such things. June 21, 2005

As expected, the new bill has been introduced. CIPPIC has resources on the Bill here. Michael Geist’s early take on the Bill is here. Quote: There is simply no denying that the lobbying efforts of the copyright owners, particularly the music industry, have paid off as they are the big winners in this bill. The […]

Trading in Stolen Credit Card Data

June 21, 2005

More news about the CardSystems security breach continues to percolate out. Equally interesting though is Tom Zeller’s behind the scenes look at the online black market in stolen credit card numbers. This is a very disturbing look at where many stolen credit card numbers end up. Quote: A user by the nickname Sirota is peddling […]

On Stealth Mode for Startups

June 19, 2005

There’s a tad of a controversy this weekend on whether or not stealth mode makes any sense (at least for web services). Mark Fletcher and Om Malik say no, Paul Kedrosky and Russell Beattie (sort of?) say yes. I wrote a while back about the impact that Groove had on Hotline – one of the […]
