“A degree of latent animosity to the whole of the wireless industry”

I sometimes wonder whether the industry really understands how much brand damage lies in wait for it as wireless heats up. Consumers have waited a long time for industry to wake up – my sense is that there is an enormous amount of pent up frustration, and that people are fed up with slow-moving, vision-less and closed-minded providers telling them what to do.

I couldn’t agree more, Rob. As soon as a GSM alternative to Rogers exists in Canada I think people will jump ship. There is so much pent-up frustration towards that brand that a new mobile provider won’t even need to dramatically beat Rogers on price – just offer a more friendly, fair and responsive alternative.

There are so many consumer reasons for dissatisfaction with the oligopoly of Bell, Telus and Rogers. One hopes that politicians will realize that they will garner an enormous amount of voter goodwill if they clip the wings of our telecom lords and masters.

To take the most egregious example, the locked-in two-year or three-year contract is something no customer wants. However the telecoms adopt a take-it-or-leave-it attitude on this. To have such punitive buy-out clauses is guaranteed to create highly dissatisfied customers, who will be hopping mad. Thankfully the Internet is now leveling the playing field and individuals can make their views known.
