Air Canada’s Wild and Woolly SMS Alert System
It’s not a great day on the grid, obviously, which makes it a perfect day to test Air Canada’s mobile flight alert system. I’m on the ground in LGA waiting for my flight, and knowing this morning that I might be, I subscribed to alerts on the incoming flight as well as mine. First problem: the incoming flight was delayed, but I got the alert that its departure was delayed 20 minutes after its scheduled departure. Second: the alert on my flight’s delay came right after, but a further delay hasn’t been issued through the alert system - it shows on the boards here at the airport, but you wouldn’t know it if you were relying on the alerts. So, you shouldn’t. For now, it’s still just entertainment.

My experience has been different. A couple of years ago, while living through a “rolling delay” in Montreal in the middle of winter, I consistently received text message status that was more accurate and up-to-date than the information the AC employees at the desk had. I kept showing them: “See, it’s delayed another 1/2 hour.”
Nice. Well, we were just delayed again, and I found out on the Web. No SMS alert yet.
