[...] Rob Hyndman makes a good observation that older folks are more cynical and take less risks. Instead of saying “let’s try it” they tend to name reasons why something can’t be done, as opposed to many twenty-somethings with an experimental, risk-tasking bent.
Fred has posted again on the topic, this time with a gender angle. In the post is the summary of the age issue that, as a 41 year old entrepreneur, I (want/need to) agree with most: "young entrepreneurs may have a higher likelihood of home runs and older entrepreneurs have a higher batting average."

"I’m not sure why this topic resonates with me so much, but I think it’s partly because I spend so much of my time encouraging the people around me - clients and others - to reach out and take a chance on the opportunities they have."

Boy you struck a chord there. Our entire business is about doing exactly that, encouraging people in middle age to make the changes in their lives to really enjoy the next 40-50 years. With longevity gains and the changing face of retirement, being entrepreneurial in middle age should not be ruled out. That said, not all roads have to lead to VCs. If, for possibly valid reasons, they have a bias against those over 30, then so be it. Doesn't mean that one shouldn't start a business but it might mean one shouldn't start a business that will depend on raising VC capital.

My full post on this topic is at: http://lifetwo.com/production/node/20070522-silicon-valley-does-not-like-middle-age-entrepreneurs
