Akismet Cracked Again – Comments Require Login

Judging from the flood of email this morning for moderation of comments telling me about marvellous opportunities to buy phen-phen online, spammers have cracked the DNA to Akismet again. Comments require login again until the deluge ends.

Have you tried Spam Karma 2? I’ve been using it and removing the moderation so that it will move all the spam stuff over to the spam folder. 99% of all spam there are spam.

I also use Bad Behavior to block all robotic and machines from accesing the site too but that will block some humans too.

For contact form, Doug Karr’s modded plugin from Ryan Duff’s contact form plugin.

There’s something interesting that someone commented and recommended in the comments. Check out this link. I haven’t tried it yet (I’m always worried about screwing things up with plugins but when I have the time, I’ll try it out.

    Seems very interesting.

I have, and loved it, but my theme is not Ajax-friendly, unfortunately. Spam Karma gives me bad karma :(

I recently encountered the same issue with Akismet. After installing a very simple captcha plugin the issue seemed to resolve itself.

    Good luck.

Now installed, John – thanks very much for the tip – much appreciated.

You edit the custom_anti_spam.php to change/add your own captcha words… On my site I changed them all to OILERS’ related entries.

Too bad the OILERS went down!! I guess plugging, plug-inning them didn’t help.

You can change the captcha words in the plugin’s php file… I changed all mine to reflect my team spirit, and then my team left the building… lol

Excellent idea. I’ll try to figure something out that has staying power :)

So, you’re running this new captcha plugin fine and no problems with spam? I may want to check it out then.

Yes, although I had turned Akismet off as well and that wasn’t a great idea. So I’m running both.

    You need BOTH… lol

Thanks to John’s referral of the captcha plugin, I have discovered that I didn’t need Bad Behavior anymore. It’s amazing how well this plugin works! I no longer have any spam comments in the spam folder at all and it’s such a breath of fresh air! I couldn’t believe it! I used to have to delete over several hundred spam comments in the spam folder that Akisimet and SK2 has found and it was annoying to have to go through them all to make sure no legit comments were caught there. Now, it’s nothing!

    Thanks again!

Excellent – I’ll check it out.

I installed the captcha plugin over a month ago. I think I have had two spam messages since then… Both were caught by Akismet.

Thanks again, John for the link to the plugin. It’s amazing! I have not seen a single spam in the Akisimet folder (and I always get annoyed when I find them) so you can understand how happy I am now. I didn’t like Bad Behavior because it was blocking a lot of non robots and I was still getting tons of spam comments anyway. Thanks again! No Bad Behavior and no spam. Woohoo!
