In one theory, Garth Turner was kicked out of the Conservative party because he was writing about things on his BLOG that the party leadership didn't like. As someone involved in technology law I have been following his BLOG for a long time, but never saw these alleged "leaks".

The Liberals did accept him into the party, but I don't know if that means anything. The Liberals seem a bit disorganized at the moment, allowing the Conservatives to control many of the messaging (The Conservatives were publicly attacking the carbon tax with FUD before most Canadians even knew opposition parties were talking about it).

I think all the parties need to realize that constituents are getting tired of this centralized "control" over communications. I vote for the MP in my riding despite his party banner, not because of it. I wish he blogged more, but I do find I get responses to my emails which is something better than I hear about most MPs.

Times may be changing -- the main party sites seem to have one-way BLOGS (text, some audio and video) to augment their press releases, but this doesn't yet seem to be extending to two-way conversation or to riding-specific or MP-specific sites. They all claim to want feedback, but as someone who tends to write things when solicited I've yet to have acknowledgement of letters from any of the 3 national parties with seats in the house.

Hi Russell, thanks for the comment. What's your sense of the odds of the parties supporting this? I wonder about the Canadian context, given the parliamentary system of tight party control. And it seems to me that the parties would be loathe to lose "control" over communications in this way.

For a Canadian example that is pretty good, check out http://www.garth.ca/ . He has a text BLOG and a Video BLOG, and the MP himself seems to be approving comments and adding his own notes to the comments. It truly is an open dialog.

The main problem IMHO? Since he is only one of the 308 MPs in Canadian parliament doing this, he has a larger load of people outside of his riding commenting on his site. This badly needs to roll out to other MPs and nominated candidates for the next election so people can dialog with the MPs and Candidates they can actually vote for.
