If you are in the market for an iPod and a phone at the same time, I think this will appeal greatly to you. If you just got an iPod for Christmas (as aparently 21 million people did) then maybe not as much. I should point out that Apple's most popular iPod by far is the 4GB Nano.. so it seems that either most people dont have as large of a music collection as you do (which includes me.. my iTunes library is at around 5GB right now), or they are not as concerned about bringing all of their music with them at all times. In any case, I suspect that the 8GB memory limit wont bother people quite as much as power users seem to think. As for the size, I've looked at it up close, and it looks like a very nice size. Certainly not as small as a perl, but hard for me to believe it's modest size would be a deal killer for anyone. I've never really understood this requirement to open Word and Excel files. The iPhone is one of the few phones around where this might actually be an acceptable experience, but I can't imagine that this would be a very satisfying experience on screens as small as most smartphones posses. I wouldn't be surprised if the iPhone will be able to open word files. After all, MacOS X's TextEdit application can currently open Word documents...

Now *that* is funny - and I had no idea. Thanks, Glenn. It could certainly make a difference.

I had a chance to play with an iPhone yesterday, and I didn't test the typing, unfortunately. But I found it very responsive.

David Pogue should disclose if he didn't already that he is very very tall and has hands the size of dinner plates. Really, he is a towering, trim individual, well over six feet tall with large hands. He's a piano player and composer (quite accomplished before his writing career), and being able to reach two octaves with one hand is pretty cool.

I am exaggerating, of course, but his experience with the iPhone could definitely suffer because of his physical proportions in a way that he wouldn't have a problem with other devices that aren't quite so petite.

Yes I agree with you, the iphone is clearly a product for rich people who like luxery very much. I guess that earth grounded people will not want to have this phone at all.

Thank you for sharing this story with me !
