[...] But in today’s twist, Mike Arrington, who as I’ve blogged recently now must be seen as a Valleywag scoop competitor, uses his bully pulpit to take gratuitous shots at Denton, in much the same way he accuses Denton of taking shots at Calacanis (”Denton has always played second fiddle to Jason, never quite achieving the same level of success. Many say this is because he can’t handle it when his writers get more attention than he does”). It’s all quite interesting, but only as a lesson in media social anthropology. But really, is it just me, or do these guys all seem just a touch too fascinated with each other? [...]

[...] This isn’t the first time this has happened and it’s not limited to socially driven news sites like digg. The blogosphere widely reported last week that Yahoo had acquired mybloglog after Techcrunch broke the story. An formal announcement has yet to be made. This is another example of what I’d been speaking about earlier but this time the story highlights just how Digg is sorely lacking in the Collective Inteligence department. [...]

Yeah, a lot of people missed the VW story and credited TC, which was probably the intention. The original TC story included not only a link, but an entire explanation of how VW got the scoop - the whole paragraph was removed.

Valleywag got the scoop. I seem to remember that the original Techcrunch story credited Valleywag, then the link was removed.

[...] A propos of a post or two I wrote this week that fastened on the (to me, anyway) intriguing development of competition in the valley among blogs for tech news scoops, Scoble wags his finger at the kids about loose lips sinking ships - Hey kids, it’s fun until someone loses an eye! - in this case over the MyBlogLog story. Is it just me, or is Scoble starting to sound like your best friend’s Mom? [...]

MyBlogLog is a goldmine. They have tons of incredibly valuable data. $10MM is NOT enough for this company. They should be looking for an acquisition of around $50MM in my humble opinion. These type of companys (MyBlogLog, InCircles.com etc) represent the future of the distributed app based social Internet - buying now is very smart -if I was MyBlogLog I would wait a year.

Different newspapers and media outlets have different standards for how they report scoops, and whether they give credit or not. In most cases if it's a direct competitor then a news outlet will often resort to the "reports say" construction -- or "one newspaper is reporting" if they want to make it sound dubious.
