[...] Which would leave YouTube with lots of Aunt Jenny content, a bit of great user-generated content and some permissioned content - cool, sure, but ultimately much less interesting. Unless they develop something far more interesting on the technology side - something that makes their role a much more compelling value for the creators. [...]

[...] So it seems pretty clear to me that YouTube isn’t the Single Best Thing That Has Happened to the Net in the Past Several Years. Maybe it’s close, maybe not. I sure do like those clips of Aunt Jenny, though. Related Posts [...]

It's certainly true that there's hyperbole in that comment, but there are vastly more Aunt Jenny's than there are Pachelbel's Canon, IMO.

Not that I want to shrug off the "ordinarily sensible" tag or anything, but I don't find Megaphone Mark's other comments any more persuasive than his main thesis. First of all, not all "user-generated content" is your Aunt Jenny watching her niece tapdance -- and good ones like the kid playing Pachelbel's Canon on his guitar get *millions* of views, not 60,000. That's got to be worth something. Will advertisers waste money on such "viral" videos? Sure they will -- just like they waste a large proportion of their money on TV and magazine ads.
