[...] All of this tends (although I hate to admit it) to support my friend Rob Hyndman’s contention that top Diggers should be compensated because what they do is effectively work, and that Jason Calacanis recognized that and rewarded it (Rob’s thoughts can be found in the comments here, and in his post here). My argument has always been that Diggers get rewarded in other ways that are non-financial — they get bragging rights, for example, and the admiration of their peers, which in some cases is worth more than money.
[...] It appears that not only is the Netscape model succeeding, but the Kevin Rose model is failing, with top Diggers thinking, If Kevin Rose isn’t going to pay me for my time, maybe someone else will. As Matt Ingram mentions, this ultimately supports Rob Hyndman’s belief that Diggers deserve to get paid for their hard work. Bragging rights via a place on the Digg Top Users leaderboard isn’t enough, and this fact is becoming more and more apparent. Curtiss Thompson, a top Digger, shares his thoughts on Ad Revenue Sharing in Social Media. [...]

Well, maybe, but they do already spend lots of time preventing that for other forms of abuse - they're on top of it, or need to get on top of it to maintain the integrity of the community. Just a part of managing the community, IMO - like spam, etc. :)

Seriously though, it occurred to me that maybe Kevin doesn't want to pay top Diggers in part because that would provide even more incentive for people to try and "game the system."
