[...] “Not generally unlawful” runs against the general grain of “legal expert” commentary that has been quoted in HP stories over the past few days, and it certainly runs into the brick wall of Viet Dinh’s comment I quoted yesterday: “The facts are not totally in,’’ Dinh said. “But one thing that is clear is pretexting to get personal records is illegal under federal law and California law.
This is all insanity, isn't it? You have to feel sorry for the legacy of H and P. There's been nothing but turmoil here for too long. What a terrible shame...

it's amazing - at least to me - that patricia dunn hasn't resigned already or been forced out. if she was the person who authorized the "witch hunt", then she should be the one to take the fall. do you think she's related to frank dunn?..:)

Nice summary of the case. I was corresponding with a reporter colleague and asked was being on HP's pretexting list as a reporter the modern tech equivalent of being on Nixon's Enemies List? I know that reporters in the early 1970s were both appalled and delighted at times to be on that list. Appalled because it meant your entire history as recorded by the gummint was unveiled (tax records, FBI file, wiretapping, etc.), but delighted because it meant that you'd actually gotten under the administration's skin. And who lost? Nixon.

Who's going to lose this time around? Not just Dunn. I suspect that there will be a clean slate of directors, some perhaps indicted, others forced to resign, and we'll see Bill Hewlett appear from the mist to take the reins as chair. Crazy?
