More Threats from Apple

4 May ’06

I’ve been mystified lately by Apple’s inclination to sue first and ask questions later – Think Secret’s disclosures being the most visible example. Oops, they’ve done it again – this time going after a forum for posting material on the now widely reported problem some MacBook Pros have with heat, and how one user lowered his and his MBP’s temperature by removing the original thermal grease and reapplying a smaller amount. This particular attack of the Killer Apples is now attracting much heat and light in the ‘sphere. Nota bene: these are your customers. Your best customers, probably. Fans. Hard-core, stay up all night tinkering, wouldn’t buy a PC if my life depended on it fans. Is suing them, in what is an obvious attempt to suppress discussion of the defect, really a particularly clever idea? Will it – oh, I don’t know – draw more attention to the defect? Would this be a good time to mention that we are discussing the new PR at mesh?
