[...] I’ve blogged before about the impact of podcasting on radio, and more recently, about the opportunity for internet radio in a wifi cloud world. Podcasting has certainly affected my use of radio, and having all of my audio media digitized and available - in-house, in-hand or in-car - has changed the way I use it. All in all, audio has become much more relevant. But what about radio? [...]

They have wifi in aeroplanes (e.g. Singapore Airlines) so speed shouldn't be the problem. Of course the technology inside a plane is probably a bit more expensive than what is found in the average car :-)

I would not be surprised to see a Google Radio, and I suspect they would take the opposite approach of Pandora and Last.fm where the categorization is completely performed by humans (Pandora is editorial whereas Last.fm uses collaborative categorization). If a computer is capable of helping compose Mozart's 42nd symphony they are undoubtedly capable of automated categorization of music, though it will be interesting to see the pros and cons: really this would be the same kind of struggle Google and Yahoo are in over whethere computers can automatically categorize stuff (Google approach) or if it is better to let people tag content (Yahoo Flickr and del.icio.us for example). More on this here: http://www.nudecybot.net/2006/03/musical-genetics-and-future-of-radio.html
