The VIA folks are saying “among the first” to experience this new technology — the ACE commuter rail in the Bay Area and into the Sacramento Valley has had Wi-Fi equipped trains for a couple of years, but not at 3G cellular speeds. The 3G component was really the missing piece for rail Wi-Fi.
In England, there’s a test of using WiMax along tracklines to increase speed and reduce transmitters.
Yeah, Wi-Fi on the train is cool and everything, but how much is it going to cost? If it’s free, I might think about taking VIA. If not, forget it. Remember, wireless is not a service — it’s a condiment.
