Because if he wins enough seats — especially in Toronto — he has a good chance of being the balance of power in Parliament.

It’s a good point, David. But I wonder whether now that the game really is over for the Liberals he ought to be focusing more on Harper, and trying to collect the voters who are leaving the Liberals in this election. Put another way, leave Martin to Harper, and focus on ensuring that disaffected Liberals come to him – perhaps as a way of ensuring that the Tories take no more than a minority.

I wouldn’t say it’s game over for the Liberals, but we have to remember it’s really 300 races and Jack has a reasonable chance today of winning some of those contests in a way he didn’t have on December 15. The strategy for winning those particular races is to shake votes from the Liberals, who are almost certainly going to shift leftwards rather rightwards.

For voters likely to go NDP, there’s an element of “it’s only choir preaching” for Layton — they _already_ agree with him on Harper and the Cs, so there’s really little hay to be gained here for him.
