More Broadband Over Powerlines

21 Dec ’05

TXU, a power company based in Texas, has announced a substantial broadband over powerlines initiative:

TXU Electric Delivery, the nation’s sixth largest electric transmission and distribution company and a subsidiary of TXU Corp. (NYSE: TXU), and CURRENT Communications Group, LLC, the nation’s leading provider of broadband over power line (BPL) solutions, today announced an agreement to transform TXU Electric Delivery’s power distribution network into the nation’s first broadband-enabled Smart Grid.

From the Star-Telegram:

TXU will not offer broadband Internet or other telecom services on the upgraded transmission system, but Current will be able to make such offerings to TXU’s 2.3 million customers in North Texas.

That will give homeowners a third portal, after their telephone and cable lines, for receiving Internet and telecom service.

The technology is still in early days, but could this be a feasible third competitor in Canadian broadband delivery?
