Bell Launches EV-DO

Tyler has the details on Bell’s launch of EV-DO in Toronto and Montreal yesterday:

Bell Mobility yesterday launched its so-called 3G or third-generation wireless network in Toronto and Montreal, where users will get data download speeds as high as 2.4 megabits per second — as fast as many home high-speed Internet services that use cable or digital subscriber line technology.

The average speed ranges from 400 to 700 kilobits per second, which is enough to download a 1-megabyte file in less than 20 seconds. That’s roughly equivalent to the text from an average-sized book or one minute of a digital music file.

The Globe covers the roll-out and roaming:

The EV-DO will be available in Toronto and Montreal immediately. Bell says it plans to roll it out across Canada beginning next year. Bell Mobility has also concluded an agreement with its U.S. roaming partner to extend EV-DO coverage for Bell Mobility customers into the United States.
