Wireless Number Portability to Take Just Less Than Forever

The Globe reports that the telcos have announced a two year timetable for introducing wireless number portability. Inexplicably, the Globe article neglects to report on any of the context of the story, quite a lot of which has been blogged here and elsewhere, and mostly just parrots the industry line (once again).

Wireless customers will have to wait two years to gain the right to keep their phone numbers when they switch to a new carrier.

The wireless industry today unveiled its long-awaited plan to introduce portable wireless numbers in Canada. A pilot trial is scheduled for mid-2007, with national availability in September, 2007.

The industry report on implementation is here. Based on a quick read, its principal purpose is spinning the industry justification for delaying the implementation as much as possible.

any information on how I can help lobby for a quick outcome on tel. # portability would be much appreciated. I have already been raging at the CRTC,but that is like wading through molasses.

    Thanks

PS Do you think it possible that I could ask my phone co. to sell me the dam number, much as I am against going that route.
