Rogers Expands into Mobile Push Mail

11 Apr ’05

Rogers has announced that it will begin offering a new branded enterprise push e-mail offering to be called MyMail that will effectively compete with the e-mail service offered by the Blackberry. The service will use technology from Visto Corp. that works with corporate e-mail servers to push e-mail out to a wide variety of mobile devices. Quote:

The new Rogers service, called MyMail, uses software from California-based Visto Corp. that performs in a similar manner to RIM’s leading BlackBerry software for corporate customers.

But the Visto platform connects to a much greater variety of devices than RIM’s and offers higher profit margins to carriers. (Analysts estimate that, on average, carriers are paying about $10 of the monthly fees they collect from subscribers to RIM).

With MyMail, Rogers will be able to offer customers real-time data delivery not only on BlackBerrys, but also on devices that run other operating systems, such as those from PalmSource Inc., Microsoft Corp. or Symbian Ltd.

Something I’ve always admired about Rogers is their (by Canadian standards) adventurous attitude towards new technology – they are almost always the earliest-adopter – and looking for new and less-expensive means of providing mobile enterprise e-mail is a good example.
